Maryland energy efficiency sales tax holiday, February 2018

  • Jan 18, 2018 | Gail Cole

Certain energy-efficient lightbulbs are exempt from Maryland sales tax during the upcoming sales tax holiday.

Every February, Maryland provides a tax-free period for certain energy efficient products. In 2018, the Maryland Energy Efficiency Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 and concludes at midnight on Monday, Feb. 19.

During the tax-free period, the following Energy Star products are exempt from Maryland’s 6 percent sales tax:

  • Air conditioners
  • Boilers
  • Compact fluorescent lightbulbs and light-emitting diode (LED) lightbulbs
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Refrigerators (standard size)
  • Washers and dryers

Sales of solar water heaters in Maryland are now exempt from tax year-round.

Retailers making sales in or for delivery into Maryland may not charge sales tax on qualifying items. This can complicate sales and use tax compliance, as it’s a hassle to adjust point-of-sale systems for one weekend only. Furthermore, the tax holiday creates unknowns. How does the sales tax holiday affect delivery charges or layaways? The Maryland Comptroller doesn’t say.

Tax automation software can simplify tax compliance in all states, at all times. Learn how it works.
