Lodging marketplaces to collect and remit Idaho tax starting January 2018

  • Nov 28, 2017 | Gail Cole

Lodging marketplace providers (e.g., VRBO) must collect and remit Idaho taxes starting Jan. 1, 2018.

HomeAway, VRBO, and other short-term rental marketplaces that book lodging on behalf of property owners are required to collect and remit lodging taxes on behalf of their Idaho hosts starting Jan. 1, 2018. Airbnb already collects occupancy taxes on behalf of its Idaho hosts, having entered into a voluntary agreement with the Idaho State Tax Commission in 2016.

Temporary lodging (30 days or less) in Idaho is subject to several different taxes: local sales tax (where applicable), state sales tax, and travel and convention tax. Rentals in the Greater Boise Auditorium District are also subject to the Greater Boise Auditorium District Tax.

Property owners or managers are required to collect and remit applicable taxes whenever short-term rentals are not booked through a lodging marketplace (i.e., when a lodger books directly with the lodging provider).
