exempt sales tax

Feminine hygiene products in Illinois, January 2017.

Beginning January 1, 2017, menstrual cups, menstrual pads, and tampons are exempt from Illinois sales and use tax. The exemption is due to the enactment of Senate Bill 2746 (P.A. 99-855).

Proposed exemptions for essential items such as tampons and diapers are sweeping the globe and the nation. Many states, including California, have considered or are considering them this session. In addition to Illinois, the following states have enacted exemptions:

  • New York (feminine hygiene products), September 1, 2016
  • Connecticut (diapers, feminine hygiene products), July 2018
