The Georgia (GA) state sales tax rate is currently 4.0%. Depending on local municipalities, the total tax rate can be as high as 8%.

Georgia was named in Kiplinger’s 2011 10 tax-friendly states for retirees. But whereas food and prescription drugs are exempt from sales taxes, Kiplinger noted that sales taxes can add up to a total of 8% in some local jurisdictions.
