Sales Tax Rate to Rise in Clallam County, Washington

  • Jan 18, 2016 | Gail Cole

 La Push, Clallam County.

The local sales tax rate in unincorporated Clallam County, Washington, decreased by 0.2% on July 1, 2015. It was hoped the reduction would stimulate the economy in the remote Olympic Peninsula, where Clallam County is located. Since then, consumers have enjoyed a combined sales and use tax rate of 8.2%.

But now Clallam County Commissioners have notified the Washington State Department of Revenue that the combined rate for unincorporated Clallam County will be restored to 8.4%, effective April 1, 2016.

The commissioners have decided to restore the 0.2% local tax due to “serious concerns about the long-term sustainability of the county budget,” as Commissioner Bill Peach explained to the Sequim Gazette. Were the reduced rate left in place for an entire year, county revenue would decrease by $1 million.

Local sales and use tax rates must be changed by ordinance. A public hearing will be held January 26, 2016, to take that final step.

Two rate changes in under a year creates compliance headaches. Simplify sales tax with an automated solution. Learn how it works.
