Several Alabama Department of Revenue.
March 2014 rate changes
The City of Huntsville has increased its sales and use tax rate from 3.5% to 4.5%. The rate change applies to general sales, sales of admissions to places of entertainment and amusement, and vending machine sales of food for human consumption. The sales tax rate for automotives remains 1.75%.
The City of Irondale has increased the rate of sales and use tax for the “net difference paid for all automotive vehicles, truck trailers, semi-trailers and house trailers.” The old rate was 1% and the new rate is 1.5%.
The Town of Rockford has asked the Alabama Department of Revenue to administer its sales, use, rental and lodgings taxes. Taxes for the tax period ending March 31, 2014, should be remitted to the Sales and Use Tax Division of the Alabama Department of Revenue, or online through My Alabama Taxes.
December 2013 rate change
In addition, the Department of Revenue has announced that the City of Lanett increased the rate of sales tax, effective December 1, 2013. The rate for general sales, admissions and food sold through vending machines increased from 4% to 5%. The rate for machinery and equipment and related parts increased from 2% to 2.5%.
Huntsville, Irondale, Lanett and Rockford sales taxes should be filed through My Alabama Taxes.
Keeping track of sales tax rate changes is challenging, especially given that some changes aren’t announced until after the fact. An automated sales tax system helps.
