sales-tax-rate-changes

Hear ye, hear ye! The Illinois Department of Revenue is announcing local sales tax rate changes effective July 1, 2013. If your business has to collect sales tax in the Prairie State, then get ready to adjust your cash registers and accounting applications to the updated rates (see below).

Illinois Tax Traps

Of course, finding the right sales tax rate in Illinois is not always a simple task. Illinois is a home rule state, meaning that local jurisdictions have greater freedom to determine their own sales tax rates. To find the right tax rate in Illinois a business must account for the following:

  • Locally imposed sales tax does not apply to sales of qualifying drugs and medical appliances, or, items that must be titled or registered by an agency of Illinois state government and reported on Form ST-556, Sales Tax Transaction Return.
  • Some jurisdictions may impose taxes not collected by the Illinois Department of Revenue. To find those rates, a business must contact the localities directly.
