2013 Sales Tax Rate Changes in Washington.

The Washington State Department of Revenue has released several local sales tax rate increases. They will take effect January 1, 2013.

Within the city limits of sunny Sequim, on the Olympic Peninsula, the local sales and use tax will see an increase of one-tenth of one percent (.001). The tax applies to both retail sales and services. Revenue generated by this tax increase “will be used for criminal justice and public safety purposes.”

Beginning January 1, 2013, there will be a local sales and use tax rate increase of three-tenths of one percent (.003) in San Juan County. As in Sequim, the additional funds will go towards criminal justice and public safety.

However, both in Sequim and San Juan County, “the retail sale or use of motor vehicles, and the lease of motor vehicles for up to the first thirty-six months of the lease, are exempt from the public safety tax imposed.” It should be noted that the new sales and use tax does apply to service and parts on motor vehicles.
