In his state of the state address, Governor Haslam entered his second year without any drastic changes to the Tennessee state sales tax rate. However, according to the Tennessee.gov newsroom, Governor Haslam’s legislation proposes lowering “…the state portion of the sales tax on food from 5.5 percent to 5.3 percent with the goal of lowering it to 5.0 percent in three years.”
In addition to his food tax recommendation, the Governor has proposed legislation regarding:
- State employment practices
- School and educational reform
- Job growth
Haslam stated, “This legislative agenda is made up of a strategic group of bills aimed at impacting key issues that are crucial to tackle now. I look forward to working with the Legislature on these important initiatives.”
